In 2016 I was asked to be part of a project called Balsall Heath in Conversation, by Mela Associates
, and Jenny Peevers
. Friction Arts and myself were asked to run a series of interventions on the Moseley Road in Balsall Heath, in order to engage residents with a series of questions about the area, its public spaces, and the bisecting of the suburb by the A435. Sandra and Lee came up with the idea of a juice bar with very solicitous waiters and a menu of juices all at the price of a conversation. I made 5x4" paper portraits of some of those who came, and gave them the photo on the spot (instant-ish), developing them quickly at Darkroom Birmingham
nearby. I scanned some of their comments onto the portraits and there was an event/ celebration of the project in October of that year, where large prints were exhibited.
Some of the portraits were also shown at the 2018 RBSA Photography Prize Exhibition.
